2008 North Hills Soccer Club Skill Evaluations

June 5th and June 10th

Registration-6:00pm Evaluations 6:30-7:15

Reis Run Soccer Complex

Each year the North Hills Soccer Club conducts skill evaluations for the upcoming fall AND spring sessions. The evaluations are for children that are coming out of the U7/8 program into the U9 age group, as well as some older age groups as determined necessary by the club. They are used for determining placement of players on specific travel teams, and also for getting a handle on the development of the younger children overall. In the past there has been confusion over what the meaning of travel soccer is, as compared to in-house and division A or 1. I will try to explain that briefly here.

In-house soccer- this is developmental soccer played without goalkeepers on Saturdays at Reis Run. The children have shorter practices and the focus is to develop their soccer skills and to instill a desire to come back and keep playing.

Community Travel- These children will be in the U9-U10 age group. Community Travel games are also played on Saturdays only. The differences in this game are the addition of goalkeepers, a larger field and a more structured soccer-like setting. The teams will travel short distances. The travel will be limited to local communities such as NA, Shaler, Fox Chapel and Avonworth. They will practice twice per week at Reis Run.

Travel Soccer- This is where things get kind of confusing if you are not familiar with the way the leagues are set up. Travel soccer can be played at different levels. First, on the girls’ side, the level of competition is set up with a lettering system. A, B or C is used to designate the level of play. The A teams will play against the highest level of competition in PA West. They can be scheduled to play at fairly distant locations and placement on an A team should be considered a fairly substantial commitment by both parent and child. Practices and games are competitive and highly structured. Placement on an A team is determined by the evaluations that are conducted by the club each June. Children that have not yet reached their full potential or are not interested in the commitment that division A requires can play on a B or C team. All of these teams play their games on Sunday. The B and C teams will play teams that are located in the more immediate area. On the boys’ side, it is the same, except that the levels of competition are broken down by numbers rather than letters. For example, 1, 2 and 3 are used to designate the level of competition.

For a new player to be placed on a division A or 1 travel team in either the fall or the spring, he or she MUST be evaluated! I strongly urge you to have your child attend both evaluations.

I hope this clears up some of the confusion surrounding the evaluations. Thank you for your participation in our club.
